It takes a bit of time to load which shows a program not responding prompt, but if you wait a few seconds longer the game starts and runs without any issues.
No longer need to specify speecific versions or swap out the settings file. The game now just works

Renamed settings/settings.exe and made a symlink to the game.exe in the settings folder ln -s ../game.exe settings.exe # run in the settings folder
Textures were bleeding down the side of the screen
As mentioned by buckysrevenge: the game continually crashes when launched. To solve this, rename settings/settings.exe to something else, then create a "settings/settings.exe" shortcut that points to game.exe directly. This works flawlessly (played through the entire game)
After the workaround, everything works fine.
Make a link to game.exe from settings/settings.exe.
Rename original settings/settings.exe file
In main game directory, open terminal and run ln game.exe ./settings/settings.exe
bypassed settings/settings.exe by creating link to game.exe with that location/name
settings.exe causing the crash, bypassing it by making a link directly to game.exe named settings.exe in the settings folder fixes it.
frame rate directly tied to refresh rate, game feels too slow unless at 60Hz

Kept trying this for years, since Proton 3.7 according to my report below. With 6.3 it finally works out of the box.
I had to delete the prefix from my previous attempts first, could be considered "tinkering".

Works without issues on Proton 6.3-5 except for not detecting my DS4 Controller OOTB.

Did not run with latest Proton 5.13. Works perfectly with older Proton version and one winetricks command.

After running 'winetricks dsound' in the prefix I was able to start the game. I did a full play-through with a game-pad and found no other issues.
As mentioned below, is needed to install in the Game Wine Prefix "dsound", Open a Terminal and execute WINEPREFIX=/Path/To/Steam/Games/steamapps/compatdata/329380/pfx winetricks dsound After that in my case with Intel UHD 630 the game starts, but the gameplay remains black. Then simply add in Steam the following Launcher Option: PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
It is necessary to install DirectSound into the prefix, after that the game runs perfectly fine. Either use protontricks: protontricks 329380 dsound or winetricks: WINEPREFIX=/PATH/TO/steamapps/compatdata/329380/pfx" winetricks dsound.
The game need DirectSound libraries to run, which do not get installed by Proton -> "WINEPREFIX=your_path_to_prefix winetricks dsound"... after that the game works perfectly for me. Make sure to NOT(!) use "PROTON_NO_D3D11". It caused a black screen for me when the gameplay starts.
With Proton 4.2-2 the logo Screen is shown without any tweak. But then again Blackscreen. I was able to load the game with Steam on PlayOnLinux (wine), but I don't know why with proton it doesn't load.

Without tweaks works with Black Screen. In order to make it work set this launch option: PROTON_NO_D3D11=1 %command%
